Sustainability at Scale - LEED Campus Approach & LEED for Cities

For the last two decades, the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating system has set the bar for quantifying green buildings. I have used it to certify buildings in almost every version of the rating system, including residential, corporate/commercial, retail, educational, institutional and warehouse projects. While we need to continue to create healthy and environmentally responsible new buildings and renovate our existing building stock to the same standards, we no longer have the time to do one building at a time. This session will explain the oft overlooked LEED for Campus approach that allows groups of pre-requisites and credits to be approved across an entire campus, making them automatically approved for any individual building projects without any further documentation. We will also look at the newest LEED rating system, LEED for Cities and Communities, geared at helping local leaders create and operationalize responsible, sustainable and specific plans for natural systems, energy, water, waste, transportation - revolutionizing the way cities and communities are planned, developed and operated to improve their overall sustainability and quality of life. Lastly, we will review the ARC platform, formely known as the LEED Dynamic Plaque, which offers property managers, building owners and tenants the first of a kind real-time performance tracking and certification methodology to increase the sustainability of more existing buildings as well as manage the ongoing performance of new ones. This course will qualify for 1.5 AIA and GBCI CEU. The Green Building Center is an approved AIA CEU Provider.

Healthy People, Session 2 - Creating Healthy Spaces - What Goes in Must Also Come Out Eventually.

There are over 80,000 unregulated chemicals in the building products we surround ourselves with every day. In addition, we spend 90% of our time in buildings. The ingredients in our building products are as important as the ingredients in the food we put in our bodies but there is a lot of greenwashing, confusing claims and product certifications out there. Also, everything that goes into a building or space must, at some point, come out. Where does it go? What happens to these many building materials at the end of their useful life impacts the health of our planet as well as people. Taking a cradle to cradle mentality is key to ensuring both healthy people and healthy planet. Join WELLap & WELL Faculty, Lia Nielsen, Principle of SImply Sustainable for a deep dive into what makes materials healthy and waste recycling guru Michael Buono, President of ESMG for a look at thinking about 'waste' as a resource instead of a problem with an eye to achieving net zero waste. This event will be before the Earth Day After Party 3:30-5pm and provide 1.5 CEUs that you can self report for AIA, LEED, WELL, ASID, etc. This will be offered online and in person with registration required. To join us after the education program for the Earth Day After Party, register separately for the party below. Register for Healthy People - Session 2 HERE

Healthy People, Session 1 - WELL Building Introduction

Green building standards have transformed buildings to be more environmentally conscious. Strategies to enhance human well-being have played a relatively small role. In a post-covid world, however, the time has come to elevate human health and comfort to the forefront. We spend 905 of our time in buildings surrounded by 80,000 unregulated chemicals. This session will provide an intro and overview of the WELL Building Standard, the only rating system dedicated to promoting human health and wellness.

The event will be offered online or in person, be sure to check off how you are attending on the registration form. Register HERE

You can self report this event for 1.5 CEUs for AIA, LEED, ASID, WELL, etc.

Development of a practical, fundable action plan with realistic goals & tracking is next. Our panel of experts will show what to plan for & report for carbon neutrality. Architect & Climate Reality Leader, Jason Kliwinski, Professional Engineer William Amann, Renewable Energy expert Lyle Rawlings, & Resource Specialist Lia Nielsen will break down the elements, strategies and technologies commonly found in a carbon neutrality plan and the process to go from concept to completion of reductions.
